Those performances were fast, fiery, and brimming with youthful urgency — a snapshot of New York running at full throttle. Now, more than two decades later, Chesky has revisited the same material from a different vantage point. With his new versions for 2026, he slows the music down, gives it room to breathe, and allows each piece to reveal another side of the city. What was once charged with speed and adrenaline is now filtered through experience, shaded with reflection and maturity, yet still pulsing with vitality.

Ragtime occupies a unique place in American music history. At the turn of the 20th century, Scott Joplin, James Scott, and their contemporaries forged a new language that fused African American rhythm and syncopation with European harmonic craft. It was the first great American art music, and from it jazz was born. Over the years, classical composers also tried their hand at the style. Stravinsky, Debussy, Milhaud, and Hindemith all wrote works inspired by ragtime, fascinated by its energy and cross-cultural vitality. Yet for all their cleverness, many of these attempts remained more stylization than substance — European reflections on an American form. Chesky’s goal in these rags is different: he aims to truly capture the essence and feeling of a jazz rag, to honor the swing and the street-level vitality that gave the genre life in the first place.

Each rag in this collection is a portrait of New York. Fifth Avenue Rag has the cool elegance of a city boulevard at dusk. The Duke is a gentle homage to Duke Ellington and Harlem. You’re Late for School, Kid hurtles forward with the anxiety of rushing through crowded sidewalks. The New Yorker and Island Rag are tour-de-force virtuosic showpieces that challenge the pianist with intricate tapping rhythms. Coney Island Rag captures the colorful chaos of rides, games, and laughter by the sea. And Pennsylvania Station Rag is an up-tempo meditation on one of the city’s most iconic spaces, its interlocking syncopations echoing trains departing, footsteps colliding, voices overlapping — all layered into the architecture of sound.

With Ragtime in 2026, Chesky pushes the ragtime tradition forward, fusing it with contemporary harmony and classical architecture while preserving its jazz-born vitality. This is ragtime as living art: respectful of its past, alive in the present, and open to the future. These pieces are technically demanding, but Chesky approaches them not for speed or bravura, but for nuance, color, and feeling. They are rags that swing, rags that breathe, and rags that belong to New York in all its restless energy.

"The dynamics are incredible and realistic – this is a big-sounding piano. David Chesky is virtuosic here, whether playing at breakneck tempos like “The Coney Island Rag” that would break a lesser pianist, or weaving two-handed counterpoint, hitting block chords with beautiful jazz voicings, or just landing on a note and letting it sing.
